Key Aspects

As you should know by now, the KEY ASPECTS will form the basis of the questions (both Q1 and Q2). As a reminder, they are:

CONTENT-based key aspect analysis

  • Categories: genre, purpose, tone, style
  • Language: technical codes, cultural codes, anchorage
  • Narrative: structures, codes, conventions
  • Representation: representations, selection and portrayal, ideological discourses

CONTEXT-based analysis

  • Audience: target audience, preferred reading, differential decoding, mode of address
  • Institution: internal controls and constraints, external controls and constraints
  • Society: time, place

ROLE of MEDIA analysis

  • Meeting needs: entertain, educate, inform
  • Influencing attitudes and behaviours: intentional, unintentional
  • Meeting particular purposes: profit, promotion, public service

Question 1 has the title Media Content in Context… so is talking about the content (see list above!) of the text, and the context which surrounds it. Easy way to think of it is that the content is what is IN the text, the context is that which is OUTSIDE the text .

REMINDER: Look at the stem for the question. This will mention which Key Aspects are to be the focus of the question.

For QUESTION 2 (Role of Media) Can I suggest you go over the Role of Media pages in the Spielberg Guide… and in particular things like “Fourth Estate” and “To legitimise and socialise the activities of groups” as these are quite relevant for the Role of Media texts we have looked at. 🙂

You may remember this post from earlier in the course: Role Of Media

It has a pretty straightforward reminder of the relationship between the THREE elements of RoM that you need to address in Question 2. And yes, you can draw your content examples from across the media, though in order to allow you to include suitable references to theories and theorists (like Mulvey, Butler, et al…), you may prefer to stick to representation of women in pop videos.
