  1. Read through THIS POST and then research what the following organisations do/have responsibility for:
    1. BBFC
    2. ASA
    3. OFCOM
  2. Start researching audience/genre/box office preferences and trends using statistics culled from the BFI Stats Pages. Things to find out would be along the lines of:
    1. Which is the most popular genre of film? (Is there more than one?)
    2. Is there a link between age and box office take?
    3. How could you use historic data to focus your own product?
  3. Start looking into audience research in more depth. There are some resources in THIS POST that should help you.

As you will have realised, this is about developing knowledge of institutional constraints and is also directly applicable to your product/assignments…

Can You Hear Me?

As we’ll discuss in class, it is essential that you carry out audience research but what does that actually mean, and how do you/could you go about it?

First up for you to consider (and no, it’s not definitive, or even wholly relevant per se) is this Slide Deck…

It gives a fair overview of some of the questions you will be tackling and also some hints about things you could do.

Next up is the ESF Media Page on Audience Research Methods. Lots to read through and you’ll have no excuses for not having any ideas after a look at it:

Extra! Extra! Extra! Read All About It…

Someone asked me how I knew about so many different things and, in the finest Wizard of Oz tradition, I thought I’d pull back the curtain and let you see (some) of the sources I know. And how to access them the easy way. 🙂

There are lots, actually, make that LOTS of websites devoted to film/movies/TV/newspapers et al. Too many for any one person to read them all. So you need to become selective and smarter. Start with just one or two, and then add/discard others as your needs and interests change. I’ll give you three that I rely on most, and follow it up with a quick tip on how to follow them and keep sane. 🙂

I’ve learned lots from each of these, and they are worth keeping an eye on… but rather than visiting each page, sign up for a free account (you can sign in with Google or Facebook) and subscribe to the sites you want. Then, you just need to visit feedly to get your fix…

Just a quick warning that if you want to get your questionnaire’s out to support classes tomorrow (Thursday), I’ll need to get a copy of it first thing! I’m usually in by 8:40am.

Please try to keep them to no more than 2 sides of A4 (Make the font smaller or adjust the spacing if required), and each group can have 100 copies (for easy %age calculations!)

Research, Research, Research

Where to begin?

There are three main areas you need to consider carefully, and each of them require you to think and reflect…

As well as devising your own questionnaire (and that isn’t as easy as it sounds… you have to be wary of only asking questions that you want the answer to, or of framing them so you get the answer you already want/expect), you also need to get it out there as soon as possible. By Thursday at the latest. #seriously!

Screen Shot 2016-02-08 at 19.03.10To give you a few pointers, a quick Google™ search should find you some examples… but you’re likely to find they are mostly by other Media students. This is partly because the film industry (institutions) are loathe to share their intelligence. That said, you should find some if you persevere.

You might also want to think about people who carry out audience research for the sake of BFI_COL_LOGO_GLOWresearch itself. The BFI, for example. They regularly post research findings into audiences and films in the UK (and beyond). There’s a veritable treasure trove of figures and information to be found on their Film Industry Statistics and Reports page. You’ll need to rake, but theres plenty of information there that will be of use to you for your report, and also for the Role of Media question later… #justsaying
